The Sound They Make is the Song I Sing: Meskwaki Music from Birds, Animals and Insects

Ray Young Bear, Meskwaki writer, shares insights on tribal word-songs he’s published in recent years. His work has been featured in The New Yorker, The Washington Post, Iowa Review and Yellow Medicine Review. The creative process begins with interactions with birds, animals and insects on tribal homeland in central Iowa. Using the five senses and a hand drum, Young Bear uses his first language Meskwaki to compose music that strives to bring nature closer to family and home.

Feminopraxis ruidistas

Ana Alfonsina Mora Flores
This talk portrays and shares the work of woman-centered and non-binary communities such as Feminoise Latinoamérica (Argentina) and Híbridas y Quimeras (México). These collectives have created safe and inclusive spaces to share their work and experiences through the construction of noise/ruido music that resonates with their feminist praxis, leading to a movement that both enriches their sonorities and creates a sense of sorority, belonging, and being heard.

Soundmap Workshop

Gurkan Mihci
This workshop begins with a soundwalk, focusing on listening to the environment then abstracting and visualizing the sounds heard during the soundwalk to create a soundmap. Soundmaps are representations of a specific location or path. Soundmaps are created by associating landmarks (streets in a city, train stations, stores, pathways, factories, oil pumps, etc.) and soundscapes*. While soundwalking the path, participants will define the sounds around them and write down their source, loudness, and distance, identifying the characters and the sounds can be abstracted and visualized using simple shapes/lines/dots/colors. After the soundwalk, participants will draw maps on paper using colorful markers and create a legend to identify and document the sounds visualized.

Sounding Banned Books

Performance by Dan Godston
Books and reading are essential aspects of healthy societies, yet now we’re experiencing new assaults on books and education broadly that seem quite disturbing. Creatively responding to new waves of book bannings is one way to think and act about this. We’re inviting performers (sound artists, phonographers, vocalists) to join the performance.
