  • Music beyond boundaries, between genres with Cristiana Italiani (Session 16, May 2025)

    Siete invitati a partecipare al World Listening Project durante la prossima sessione sull’ascolto — “Musica oltre i confini ed oltre i generi con Cristina Italiani” (giovedì 15 maggio (23:00 UTC+2 / 21:00 UTC+0 / 16:00 UTC-5)).

    Cristina Italiani, di formazione classica con studi e corsi di perfezionamento in Conservatori e Accademie anche all’estero ha sviluppato un interesse per l’improvvisazione e per la Musica tradizionale del Mediterraneo, Musica orientale e sta coltivando il desiderio perpetuo di abbattere le frontiere tra i generi, facendo convergere i diversi stili musicali che la attraversano nei suoi progetti musicali.

    Appassionata di arti performative e arti visive in generale, integra nella sua pratica sia il modo di pensare la musica che l’immagine, la scenografa, la performance e la poesia della risonanza tra tutti questi campi.

    Nella seconda parte l’artista Cristina Italiani ci illustrerà come ha reinterpretato  i field recording e soundscape nei recenti lavori creando un viaggio sonoro che ci trasporta in un’atmosfera, metafisica, cosmica e libera da ogni genere.     You are invited to join the World Listening Project during its next Session on Listening — “Music beyond boundaries, between genres with Cristina Italiani” (Thursday, May 15 (11 p.m. UTC+2 / 9 p.m. UTC+0 / 4 p.m. UTC-5)).

    Cristina Italiani, classically trained in studies and advanced courses in conservatories and academies in Italy and abroad, has developed an an approach that involves improvisation with traditional Mediterranean music and music from the Far East. Her work is based on her cultivated desire to break down boundaries between genres and recombine different musical styles. Passionate about the performing and visual arts, her practice involves thinking about music and imagery, performance and poetic resonance between these different fields.

    During her presentation Italiani will illustrate how she has been reinterpreting field recordings and soundscapes in recent works, creating a sonic journey that transports us to an atmosphere — metaphysical, cosmic and unconfined by any one genre.   • Community Discussion (Session 15, April 2025)

    We invite you to join us during our next Session on Listening — Tuesday, April 22nd (10 pm UTC+0 / 5 pm UTC-5). We are getting ready for World Listening Day, and with that in mind we are hosting a community discussion. What can be done to cut through the noise of today’s world—to encourage deep listening, meaningful communication and empathy. How do we find truth and understanding amid the chaos?   • Life Journey of Sound with Mikael Fernström (Session 14, March 2025)

This talk outlines a creative struggle between listening and making sound. This includes an exploration of the art practice of the duo Softday (Sean Taylor and Mikael Fernström), the emergence of the concept Acouscenic Listening and other ideas that have contributed to the work.   • Field Recording and Electronic Music with Rebecca Goldberg (Session 13, February 2025)

    You’re invited to join us for “Field Recording and Electronic Music — with Detroit-based sound artist Rebecca Goldberg“: Tuesday, February 18th (11 p.m. UTC+0 / 6 p.m. UTC-5). Field recording in electronic music has roots dating back to the mid-20th century, with pioneers like Pierre Schaeffer and Delia Derbyshire integrating environmental sounds into experimental compositions. This practice highlights the difference between “hearing” (the passive reception of sounds) and “listening” (a more intentional, analytical engagement with those sounds), as it invites listeners to engage with soundscapes in a deeper, more conscious way. Field recordings also serve as an archive, preserving sounds of the natural world, urban environments, and cultural moments that might otherwise fade away. By combining the organic sounds of nature with synthetic or electronic processing, field recordings create a fusion of the natural and machine worlds, often blurring the boundaries between the two and inviting new sonic experiences.

    Estás invitado a unirte a nosotros en nuestra próxima Sesión sobre Escucha – “Grabación de campo y música electrónica” – con la artista sonora de Detroit Rebecca Goldberg: martes 18 de febrero (11 p.m. UTC+0 / 6 p.m. UTC-5). La grabación de campo en la música electrónica tiene raíces que se remontan a mediados del siglo XX, con pioneros como Pierre Schaeffer y Delia Derbyshire que integraron sonidos ambientales en composiciones experimentales. Esta práctica resalta la diferencia entre “oír” (la recepción pasiva de sonidos) y “escuchar” (un compromiso más intencional y analítico con esos sonidos), ya que invita a los oyentes a interactuar con los paisajes sonoros de una manera más profunda y consciente. Las grabaciones de campo también sirven como un archivo, preservando sonidos del mundo natural, entornos urbanos y momentos culturales que de otra manera podrían desvanecerse.   • Exploring Sound Underwater with Joshua Sam Miller (Session 12, January 2025)

    You’re invited to join us during our next Session on Listening — Exploring Sound Underwater with Joshua Sam Miller — on Tuesday, January 28th (11 p.m. UTC+0 / 1 p.m. UTC-9. In this session, we will listen to sounds of whales, dolphins and underwater life from the Monterey Bay National Marine Protected Area. Joshua is the creator of the award-winning immersive experience Sounds of the Ocean, which combines mindful music, visual art, dance and poetry to connect people with life underwater. En esta sesión, escucharemos sonidos de ballenas, delfines y vida submarina del Área Marina Nacional Protegida de la Bahía de Monterey. Joshua es el creador de la galardonada experiencia inmersiva Sounds of the Ocean, que combina música consciente, arte visual, danza y poesía para conectar a las personas con la vida submarina.     You are invited to join us for our next Session on Listening: Cairene Car Rides — Listening to Cairo Through Automobility, with Cairo-based sound artist Abla Abd El Naby (9 p.m. UTC+2 / 1 p.m. UTC-5 on December 16th). Cairo’s automobility is one of the most profound factors influencing the urban and aural experience of the city. To fully experience Cairo’s vast, massive and expanding urban landscape one must travel through it by vehicle. Since residents have a special connection to their cars, which encompasses their navigational needs, traveling by vehicle has become a way to experience the city as a local and witness one of its most profound cultural practices.
