Field Recording and Electronic Music with Rebecca Goldberg (Session 13, February 2025)

You’re invited to join us for “Field Recording and Electronic Music — with Detroit-based sound artist Rebecca Goldberg“: Tuesday, February 18th (11 p.m. UTC+0 / 6 p.m. UTC-5). Field recording in electronic music has roots dating back to the mid-20th century, with pioneers like Pierre Schaeffer and Delia Derbyshire integrating environmental sounds into experimental compositions. This practice highlights the difference between “hearing” (the passive reception of sounds) and “listening” (a more intentional, analytical engagement with those sounds), as it invites listeners to engage with soundscapes in a deeper, more conscious way. Field recordings also serve as an archive, preserving sounds of the natural world, urban environments,
and cultural moments that might otherwise fade away. By combining the organic sounds of nature with synthetic or electronic processing, field recordings create a fusion of the natural and machine worlds, often blurring the boundaries between the two and inviting new sonic experiences.
